What is an anger problem?

Anger is a normal, healthy human emotion. It can signal that something feels unfair, threatening, or emotionally painful. The goal of anger management is not to eliminate anger. It is to understand it, express it in healthy ways, and prevent it from negatively affecting your life and relationships.

If your anger feels difficult to manage or is creating challenges at home, work, or in your relationships, counselling and psychotherapy can help you develop healthier ways to respond.

Signs it may be time to seek support when:

Anger comes out unexpectedly.

Sometimes anger seems to appear "out of nowhere." You may bottle up frustrations until they eventually boil over, surprising both yourself and those around you. These emotional outbursts can leave you feeling confused or discouraged.

You experience frequent conflict or aggression.

Arguments, hostile communication, verbal aggression, or intimidating behaviour may become recurring patterns in your personal or professional life. Even if you never become physically aggressive, repeated conflict can damage trust and make relationships more difficult to maintain.

Your anger feels difficult to control.

Perhaps you promise yourself you'll stay calm, but in the moment your emotions seem to take over. You may raise your voice, say things you don't mean, slam doors, throw objects, or struggle to calm down once you've become angry.

Your anger is affecting your relationships.

Frequent arguments, communication breakdowns, resentment, or emotional distance with your partner, family members, friends, or coworkers may indicate that anger is becoming difficult to manage. Others may tell you they feel like they're "walking on eggshells" around you, or you may notice conflict happening more often than you'd like.

Your reactions feel bigger than the situation.

You may find yourself becoming intensely angry over relatively small frustrations or feeling like your emotional response is out of proportion to what happened. Afterwards, you may wonder why you reacted so strongly or wish you had handled the situation differently.
