When to Get Help with Anxiety
Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. It's a natural response to stress, uncertainty, or challengeing situations. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, overwhelming, or begins interfering with your daily life, relationships, work, or overall wellbeing, it may be time to seek professional support.
Common signs include:
Avoiding situations, people, or places out of fear
You may find yourself declining invitations, avoiding social interactions, skipping work or school, or staying away from certain places because they trigger anxiety. While avoidance can provide temporary relief, it often reinforces anxiety over time and can make everyday life feel increasingly restricted.
Constant worrying that feels impossible to turn off
If your mind is constantly racing with "what if" scenarios, worst-case outcomes, or worries about things you can't control, it can become exhausting. You may feel like your brain never gets a chance to rest, even when there isn't an immediate problem to solve.
Difficulty relaxing or sleeping, even when you're tired
Anxiety often makes it difficult to unwind. You may struggle to fall asleep because your mind won't slow down, wake frequently during the night, or wake feeling unrefreshed despite getting enough hours of sleep. Relaxation may feel nearly impossible, even during downtime.
Feeling irritable, restless, or on edge most days
Living with ongoing anxiety can leave your nervous system in a constant state of alertness. You may feel tense, easily frustrated, impatient, or like you're always waiting for something to go wrong, even when everything appears fine.
Panic attacks or sudden episodes of intense fear
Panic attacks can feel frightening and overwhelming. They may involve a racing heart, chest tightness, dizziness, trembling, sweating, shortness of breath, or the feeling that something terrible is about to happen. Even if they only happen occasionally, they can lead to increased fear and avoidance.
