When to Get Help with Body Image Issues

Whether you're struggling with negative body image, low self-esteem, counselling and psychotherapy can help you develop a healthier relationship with your body and yourself.

Common signs include:

Negative thoughts about your body are affecting your daily life

Perhaps the biggest sign it's time to seek support is when concerns about your appearance begin interfering with your happiness, confidence, relationships, career, or overall quality of life. Therapy can help you move beyond simply "coping" and begin building a healthier, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

You avoid photos, mirrors, or social situations.

You might decline invitations, avoid being photographed, skip video calls, or stay away from social events because you're worried about how you look. Some people avoid mirrors entirely, while others repeatedly check their appearance throughout the day.

You frequently compare yourself to others.

Social media, advertisements, and everyday interactions can fuel constant comparisons. You may feel like everyone else looks better, more attractive, or more confident, leaving you feeling inadequate or dissatisfied with your own appearance.

You spend a lot of time worrying about your appearance.

You may find yourself constantly thinking about perceived flaws in your face, weight, skin, hair, or body shape. These thoughts can become difficult to turn off, making it hard to focus on work, school, relationships, or everyday activities.

Your body image is affecting your mood

Persistent shame, anxiety, sadness, embarrassment, or frustration about your appearance can take a toll on your mental health. You may find yourself withdrawing from others, feeling hopeless about your appearance, or experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression.
