What are the signs that you might be experiencing depression?

Depression is more than simply feeling sad or having a difficult day. It can affect the way you think, feel, and function in nearly every area of your life. While everyone's experience is different, depression often develops gradually, making it difficult to recognize just how much it's affecting you.

Some people experience overwhelming sadness, while others feel emotionally numb, irritable, or disconnected from themselves and the people around them. If these symptoms persist for weeks or begin interfering with your daily life, relationships, work, or overall wellbeing, it may be time to seek professional support.

Common signs of depression include:

Changes in appetite or sleep

Depression can significantly affect your body's natural rhythms. You may find yourself sleeping much more than usual, struggling with insomnia, waking up frequently during the night, or feeling exhausted even after a full night's sleep. Similarly, your appetite may increase or decrease, leading to noticeable changes in eating habits or weight.

Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

Depression often makes it harder to think clearly. You may struggle to focus at work or school, forget things more easily, lose track of conversations, or find that even small decisions feel overwhelming and mentally exhausting.

Feeling of guilt, worthlessness, or excessive self-criticism

Many people with depression experience persistent negative thoughts about themselves. You may feel like you're a burden to others, blame yourself for things outside your control, or believe you're "not good enough," even when there is little evidence to support those beliefs.

Low energy or constant fatigue

Depression can leave you feeling physically and emotionally drained. Everyday tasks such as getting out of bed, preparing meals, answering emails, or completing household chores may suddenly require far more effort than they once did.

Persistent sadness, emptiness, or emotional numbness

Some people experience ongoing sadness or frequent crying, while others describe feeling emotionally "flat," empty, or disconnected from themselves and those around them. You may feel like you're simply going through the motions without truly enjoying life.
