What are personality disorders?
Personality disorders are mental health conditions that involve long-standing patterns of thinking, feeling, relating to others, and responding to the world that differ from cultural expectations and cause significant distress or challenges in daily life.
These patterns often develop over many years and can affect relationships, work, emotional wellbeing, self-image, and overall quality of life. Because these ways of thinking and coping have often been present for a long time, they may feel like an unchangeable part of who you are. However, with the right therapeutic support, meaningful growth and lasting change are possible.
While every person's experience is unique, people living with personality disorders may struggle with:
- Challenges trusting others
- Difficulty maintaining healthy relationships
- Fear of abandonment or rejection
- Feeling misunderstood or disconnected from others
- Impulsive or self-destructive behaviours
- Intense or rapidly changing emotions
Therapy provides a compassionate, non-judgmental space to better understand these patterns, strengthen emotional regulation, improve relationships, and build healthier ways of coping.
What are common personality disorders?
Personality disorders exist on a spectrum, and no two people experience them in exactly the same way. The following are some of the more commonly recognized personality disorders that therapy can help address.
Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASD)
Antisocial Personality Disorder involves persistent patterns of disregarding the rights, safety, or feelings of others. Individuals may struggle with impulsivity, risk-taking, difficulty following social expectations, or maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is often characterized by intense emotions, difficulties regulating those emotions, and challenges maintaining stable relationships. People living with BPD frequently experience emotions very deeply, making everyday situations feel overwhelming or difficult to manage.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)
Narcissistic Personality Disorder is much more complex than simply being self-confident or self-centred. Individuals living with NPD often experience deep vulnerability beneath patterns of perfectionism, defensiveness, or an intense need for admiration and validation.
Physical recovery, hormonal changes, changes in body image, birth experiences that didn't go as planned, fertility challenges, pregnancy complications, adoption journeys, or becoming a parent through surrogacy can all bring unexpected emotional challenges.
Our therapists understand that every path to parenthood is different. We provide compassionate, non-judgmental support that honours your unique experience while helping you navigate this transition with greater resilience and self-compassion.
