What are the common signs of postpartum depression?

If you're finding it difficult to adjust to this new chapter, know that you are not failing as a parent. You're navigating one of the biggest life transitions you'll ever experience, and you deserve support.

Many new and expecting parents experience:

Feeling anxious, tearful, or emotionally "off"

It's normal to experience emotional ups and downs during pregnancy and after welcoming a child. However, if worry, sadness, irritability, frequent crying, panic, or a persistent feeling that something isn't right continues beyond the expected adjustment period or begins interfering with daily life, it may be a sign that you could benefit from additional support.

Therapy can help you understand what you're experiencing, manage overwhelming emotions, and develop coping strategies that support both your mental health and your growing family.

Feeling disconnected from your baby or partner

Many people expect an instant bond with their baby, but attachment doesn't always happen immediately. You may feel emotionally distant, numb, overwhelmed, or guilty because your experience doesn't match what you expected.

Parenthood can also place significant strain on romantic relationships. Sleep deprivation, changing roles, communication challenges, and the demands of caring for a new baby can leave partners feeling disconnected from one another.

These experiences are more common than many people realize, and they do not mean you're a bad parent or partner. Therapy can help strengthen emotional connection, improve communication, and support healthy attachment.

Feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of parenthood

Feeding schedules, sleep deprivation, financial pressures, household responsibilities, medical appointments, childcare decisions, and balancing work and family life can quickly become overwhelming. Many parents worry they're not doing enough or fear making mistakes.

Therapy can help you navigate these challenges with greater confidence, develop realistic expectations, build healthy coping strategies, and reduce the pressure to be a "perfect" parent.

Feeling isolated or alone

Parenthood can be surprisingly lonely, even when you're surrounded by people. You may feel like no one understands what you're going through, struggle to maintain friendships, or find it difficult to ask for help.

Whether you're a first-time parent, parenting on your own, or adjusting to a growing family, therapy offers a supportive space where you can talk openly about your experiences, reduce feelings of isolation, and strengthen your support network.

Struggling to adjust to pregnancy, birth, or postpartum changes

Physical recovery, hormonal changes, changes in body image, birth experiences that didn't go as planned, fertility challenges, pregnancy complications, adoption journeys, or becoming a parent through surrogacy can all bring unexpected emotional challenges.

Our therapists understand that every path to parenthood is different. We provide compassionate, non-judgmental support that honours your unique experience while helping you navigate this transition with greater resilience and self-compassion.
