INDIVIDUAL VS. RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING
Is it you, the relationship, or both that needs support?
A short, guided reflection consisting of fourteen questions a therapist might ask you to help you decide between individual and relationship counselling.
What is non-monogamy?
Non-monogamy refers to relationship structures in which people have the freedom to pursue more than one romantic, emotional, or sexual connection, with the knowledge, communication, and consent of everyone involved. The term encompasses a wide range of relationship structures, and there is no single way to practice non-monogamy.
Non-monogamy may include:
- Open relationships
- Polyamory
- Swinging
- Want to integrate insights into daily life or healing goals
How do we support non-monogamous relationships?
Traditional approaches to relationship therapy don't always account for the realities of non-monogamous relationships. We believe that clients shouldn't have to spend their therapy sessions educating their therapist about polyamory, open relationships, or consensual non-monogamy before you can begin addressing the concerns that brought them there.
At Prince Edward County Counselling and Psychotherapy (PECCP), we provide non-monogamy-affirming and sex-positive therapy that respects diverse relationship structures and doesn't assume that monogamy is the goal. Our clinicians can support clients navigating:
- Challenges with family, stigma, and societal misunderstanding
- Identity development and fluidity within non-monogamous lifestyles
- Navigating multiple relationships and changing
- Relationship transitions or opening a monogamous relationship
