Counselling and Psychotherapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It can impact your relationships, your sleep, your ability to trust, and your overall sense of safety. Our clinicians at Prince Edward County Counselling and Psychotherapy (PECCP) provide trauma-informed therapy to help you process the pain, regain control, and begin your healing journey.

Whether your trauma stems from childhood experiences, abuse, violence, war, or a recent life-threatening situation, our therapists create a supportive and non-judgmental space.

What are the common signs of PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect every part of your life, including your emotions, relationships, physical health, and sense of safety. While PTSD is often associated with military combat, it can develop after many different types of traumatic experiences, including abuse, accidents, medical trauma, violence, natural disasters, childhood neglect, or repeated exposure to distressing events.

Symptoms don't always appear immediately after a traumatic event. For some people, they begin within days or weeks, while others may not notice significant symptoms until months or even years later. PTSD can also look different from person to person, and not everyone experiences the same combination or intensity of symptoms.

Common signs of PTSD include:

Emotional numbness or feeling detached

Trauma can make it difficult to connect with your emotions or the people around you. You may feel emotionally "shut down," disconnected from loved ones, or like you're watching life happen from a distance. Activities that once brought joy may no longer feel meaningful, and it can become difficult to experience positive emotions.

Feeling constantly on edge or easily startled

PTSD often keeps the nervous system in a heightened state of alertness. You may feel hypervigilant, constantly scanning your surroundings for danger, become easily startled by unexpected sounds, or struggle to relax even when you're safe. Everyday situations may leave you feeling tense, restless, or emotionally exhausted.

Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or nightmares

Traumatic memories can return unexpectedly through distressing thoughts, vivid dreams, or flashbacks that make it feel as though the event is happening again. These experiences can be frightening and may be triggered by sounds, smells, locations, anniversaries, or other reminders of the trauma.

Persistent guilt, shame, or self-blame

Many people living with PTSD struggle with painful beliefs about themselves following a traumatic experience. They may blame themselves for what happened, question decisions they made during the event, or carry feelings of shame and worthlessness, even when they were not responsible for the trauma.

Therapy can help challenge these beliefs while fostering greater self-compassion and emotional healing.

Trouble sleeping or concentrating

PTSD can significantly affect your ability to rest and focus. Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, nightmares, poor concentration, memory problems, or feeling mentally foggy are common experiences. Many people also find it difficult to stay present because their attention is pulled toward thoughts of potential danger or intrusive memories.
