Sex Therapy | Support for Individuals and Couples / Partners

Sexuality is a deeply personal part of who we are. Yet, it's a common source of anxiety, disconnection and stress (both in ourselves and in our partnerships). Whether you are exploring your own desires, struggling with a disconnect in your relationship, or healing from past trauma, sex therapy offers a safe space to talk openly and honestly.

At Prince Edward County Counselling and Psychotherapy (PECCP), our clinicians who offer support in Sex Therapy are experienced and trained in working with a wide range of sexual concerns. We support individuals and relationships across all genders, orientations, and relationship structures. Our approach is warm, inclusive, and grounded in culturally sensitive care.

What are the reasons people seek sex therapy?

Sexual wellbeing is an important part of overall health, yet it's often one of the most difficult topics to talk about. Many people grow up without accurate information about sex, relationships, intimacy, or pleasure, while others carry shame, fear, or messages that make these conversations feel uncomfortable.

Sex therapy provides a confidential, respectful, and judgment-free space to explore concerns related to sexuality, intimacy, relationships, and sexual functioning. Whether you're seeking support as an individual or with a partner, our therapists work collaboratively with you to better understand your experiences, identify contributing factors, and develop strategies that align with your values and goals.

What do we support our clients with?

Concerns related to sexual orientation or identity

Exploring your sexual orientation, sexual identity, or understanding how sexuality fits into your overall sense of self can bring up a range of emotions and questions. You may be questioning your identity, navigating coming out, processing family or cultural expectations, or seeking a space where you don't have to explain or defend who you are.

Our therapists provide 2SLGBTQIA+-affirming, inclusive care that supports exploration without judgment, pressure, or assumptions.

Exploring kink, consensual / ethical non-monogamy, or other forms of sexual expression

Healthy sexuality looks different for everyone. Some individuals and partners seek therapy to better understand or navigate kink, BDSM, polyamory, open relationships, swinging, relationship agreements, or other forms of consensual sexual expression.

Our clinicians provide sex-positive, affirming care that respects diverse identities, relationship structures, and expressions of sexuality. Sexy therapy is all about supporting healthy communication, consent, boundaries, emotional wellbeing, and relationship satisfaction.

Healing from sexual trauma or sexual shame

Past experiences of sexual abuse, assault, coercion, harassment, or negative sexual experiences can have lasting effects on intimacy, trust, body image, desire, and relationships.

Healing takes time, and there's no "right" timeline for recovery. Our trauma-informed clinicians provide a safe, compassionate environment where you can process these experiences, rebuild a sense of safety, and develop a healthier relationship with your body and sexuality at your own pace.

Mismatched sexual desire or differences in libido

Differences in sexual desire are one of the most common concerns couples experience. One partner may want sex more often than the other, leading to frustration, rejection, guilt, resentment, or communication difficulties.

Rather than placing blame on either partner, therapy focuses on understanding the many factors that influence desire including stress, life stage, health, hormones, relationship satisfaction, parenting, mental health, and emotional connection. Together, we can work toward improving communication, increasing understanding, and finding solutions that feel respectful and fulfilling for everyone involved.

Performance anxiety

Many people worry about "performing well" during sexual activity. Concerns about erections, ejaculation, orgasm, body image, pleasing a partner, or meeting unrealistic expectations can create anxiety that makes intimacy feel stressful rather than enjoyable.

Sex therapy helps reduce performance pressure by addressing anxious thoughts, building confidence, improving communication, and shifting the focus from performance to connection, pleasure, and mutual understanding.
