What is suicidal ideation?

Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts of ending one’s life. These thoughts can range from vague feelings of wishing you didn’t exist, to more detailed plans or intent. While suicidal ideation is a serious mental health concern, it doesn't always mean someone will act on those thoughts, but it does mean support is needed.

Many people who experience suicidal thoughts are also dealing with:

Anxiety

Living with constant worry, panic, fear, or overwhelming stress can become emotionally exhausting. When anxiety feels relentless, it may begin to affect your sleep, relationships, work, or ability to enjoy everyday life. Over time, this ongoing emotional strain can contribute to feelings of hopelessness or the belief that things will never improve. Counselling and psychotherapy can help reduce anxiety while building healthier ways to cope with distress.

Chronic Pain or Illness

Living with chronic pain, a long-term medical condition, disability, or ongoing health challenges can affect far more than physical wellbeing. Constant pain, fatigue, uncertainty, changes in independence, or repeated medical appointments can contribute to isolation, grief, frustration, and emotional exhaustion. Counselling and psychotherapy provide a space to process these experiences while developing strategies to support both emotional and physical wellbeing.

Depression

Depression is one of the most common concerns experienced alongside suicidal ideation. It can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming, drain your energy, reduce motivation, and create feelings of emptiness, hopelessness, or worthlessness.

Grief and Loss

Grief can follow the death of a loved one, but it can also arise after divorce, miscarriage, job loss, changes in health, loss of identity, or other major life events. During periods of profound grief, emotional pain can feel unbearable, particularly when someone feels alone in their loss. Counselling and psychotherapy offer a compassionate space to process grief while finding ways to move forward without minimizing the significance of what has been lost.

Trauma / PTSD

Past traumatic experiences can continue affecting your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and nervous system long after the event has ended. Childhood trauma, abuse, assault, workplace trauma, military service, accidents, discrimination, or other overwhelming experiences can contribute to emotional pain that feels difficult to escape. Trauma-informed therapy can help you process these experiences safely while reducing their impact on your daily life.
