What is Trauma?
Trauma isn't defined solely by what happened to you but also how those experiences continue to affect your mind, body, emotions, and relationships long after the event has passed.
A traumatic experience can overwhelm your ability to cope, leaving your nervous system feeling stuck in survival mode. While some people recover naturally over time, others may continue to experience emotional, physical, and psychological effects that interfere with daily life.
Trauma can result from a single event, such as a serious accident or assault, or it can develop over time through repeated experiences such as childhood neglect, ongoing abuse, discrimination, or chronic stress. Two people can experience the same event and respond very differently. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to experience trauma.
Unresolved trauma can influence how safe you feel in the world, how you relate to others, how you see yourself, and how your body responds to stress. It can affect your ability to trust, regulate emotions, maintain relationships, or simply feel present in everyday life.
Common Signs of Unresolved Trauma
Avoiding reminders of certain events
You may avoid places, people, conversations, news stories, or situations that remind you of what happened.
Difficulty trusting others
Trauma can change the way you experience safety in relationships. You may find it difficult to trust people, fear being hurt or abandoned, struggle with vulnerability, or feel emotionally guarded even with those who care about you.
Feeling consistently on edge or easily startled
Your nervous system may remain in a heightened state of alertness, making it difficult to relax. You may feel hypervigilant, become easily startled by unexpected sounds or movements, constantly scan your surroundings for danger, or feel like you're always waiting for something bad to happen.
Flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or nightmares
Traumatic memories don't always stay in the past. You may experience vivid memories, unwanted thoughts, distressing dreams, or flashbacks that make it feel as though you're reliving aspects of the experience. These reactions can be unsettling and emotionally exhausting.
Persistent shame, guilt, or self-blame
Many trauma survivors carry feelings of guilt or responsibility for what happened, even when they were not at fault. You may replay events repeatedly, wonder what you "should have done differently," or struggle with feelings of shame and worthlessness that affect your self-esteem.
